The Comox Valley Regional District was established in February 2008, following the restructuring of the Comox Strathcona Regional District into two areas: the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the Strathcona Regional District (SRD). The CVRD includes the municipalities of Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland; as well as Denman and Hornby Islands, Mount Washington and a number of charming rural and coastal communities.

Like other Regional Districts across Canada, the CVRD encourages area stakeholders to partner on various governmental and community initiatives. This avoids costly and unnecessary duplication of services.

The CVRD is just over 1,725 square kilometres and has a population of 65,000(1). The CVRD provides residents with 85 services including: parks, recreation, solid waste management, recycling, fire services, emergency preparedness, transit and economic development. The region’s borders extend from Cook Creek in the south to the Oyster River in the north, west to Strathcona Park and east, encompassing Denman and Hornby Islands.

The CVRD is managed by a board of nine directors. The board of directors is comprised of three electoral area directors and, correlating with the population levels of each of the main municipalities, three directors from The City of Courtenay, two from The Town of Comox, and one from the Village of Cumberland.

Annually, the board elects its chair, who then establishes committees to deal with issues such as land use planning, environmental management and water supply.

Other local offices of government include the Federal Member of Parliament and the Provincial Member of Legislative Assembly offices.
